Musou

Dark mode is grey. This is black.

Dark Mode only changed the colour of your menus—it still leaves the rest of your screen shining grey and white light into your room. Named after Musou Black (the Japanese artist paint that absorbs 99.4% of light), Musou drops a velvet-black curtain over every window, web page, and screen you aren't using. On an OLED monitor in a dim room, the edges of your screen disappear so your window looks like it's floating in mid-air; on a MacBook or everyday monitor, the white glare disappears from your walls while your movie stays bright.

Why every screen looks better when the unused parts go dark

1. OLED Monitors: “Where did the monitor go?”

You didn't buy an OLED monitor to become its babysitter—hiding your menu bar, deleting your wallpaper, and living in an empty black desktop. Keep your Mac looking the way you love. When you step away or turn on Follow, Musou covers everything you aren't using in pure black so those pixels turn completely off, and the window you're using looks like it's hanging in thin air.

2. MacBook Pro: True Black Around Your Film

Your 14″ or 16″ MacBook Pro has thousands of tiny lights behind the screen that can switch off in the dark—but grey Dark Mode windows keep them switched on. When Musou turns the page around your video black, the tiny lights behind those parts of the screen switch off too, so even the notch at the top melts into the dark.

3. MacBook Air, iMac & Everyday Monitors: Stop Lighting the Wall

On an ordinary screen, pressing the brightness-down key dims the very movie or page you're trying to see—and on most external monitors, the keyboard brightness keys don't even work. Musou keeps what you're watching bright and turns the rest of the screen black, taking the cold white glare off your walls, your glasses, and the person sitting next to you.

4. Nothing Slept. Nothing Moved.

When your Mac puts an external monitor to sleep, it often refuses to wake up or piles all 20 of your windows onto your laptop screen. Because Musou never puts your monitor to sleep—it simply lays a black curtain over it—your music never stops, your windows never move, and one touch of the mouse brings your whole desk back at once.

Nothing leaves your Mac

Musou collects nothing. No account, no analytics, no tracking. It never saves or sends your screen anywhere. It goes online only to check a Supporter or Patron licence key when you enter one: it sends the key, a random install ID, your Mac model, and the stored activation ID to Polar (polar.sh) to verify activation and expiry. Every free feature works 100% offline.

Turn off the light around what you watch.
